MBTA and ATU Local 589 Reach Agreement to Retain Employees and Improve Service

A new agreement between the MBTA and its largest union is aimed at retaining employees at the transit agency, and state, transit and union leaders will formally announce details of the agreement Wednesday morning.

The labor agreement, made between the MBTA and ATU Local 589 of Boston Carmen, is for four years and, according to a news release, includes general wage increases as well as specific increases for hard-to-hire jobs, among others.

The goals of the agreement: “to bolster the MBTA workforce and ensure the availability of quality service to all riders,” a news release said.

Wednesday’s media availability to formally announce the new agreement is expected to include comments from Governor Maura Healey, MassDOT Secretary Gina Fiandaca, union president Jim Evers, MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, as well as a union worker. called Alice Gaston.
