Ukrainian Energy System Faces Capacity Decrease and Repair Challenges in August

In August, the capacity of the Ukrainian energy system decreased significantly due to the shutdown of the nuclear power unit. Ukrenergo warned that the last month of summer would be the most difficult, as many power units of all types of power plants are under repair.

“Today, on August 2, another nuclear power unit was taken out for repair. Because of this, production has decreased at nuclear power plants, which cover most of the consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to significantly save electricity, especially during the evening hours of maximum consumption,” Ukrenergo reports.

The operator added that electricity consumption is growing due to the heat. “The highest consumption on Tuesday, August 1, was at 21.30 and increased by 1.7% compared to Monday. This is equivalent to the capacity of one thermal power unit, which must be additionally involved in order to meet the needs for electricity. However, the number of power units that can operate and produce electricity is significantly limited due to a large-scale repair campaign,” Ukrenergo continues.

The operator also said that in the morning and in the evening they import electricity from Slovakia and Moldova with a total capacity of more than 400 MW. However, this is not enough. The capacity of the repaired NPP units is 1 GW each, which corresponds to more than 5% of consumption.

Previously EADaily reported with reference to Ukrenergo that August would be the most difficult for the Ukrainian energy system.

“Repairs are ongoing at many thermal and hydroelectric power plants. They should be updated as much as possible by the new heating season, when the need for electricity will be much higher. Scheduled repairs are also underway at some nuclear power units, ”the Ukrainian operator specified. He explained that in August the largest number of power units would be under repair.

In the next heating season, Ukraine plans to use the full power of nuclear generation, 8 GW, Energy Minister German Galushchenko said.

At the same time, Centrenergo, the owner of key thermal power plants in Ukraine, reported problems with spare parts, and private DTEK reported a lack of assistance from the government.
