Spanish Youth Paul’s Inspiring Testimony of Faith in Letter to the Pope

The 21-year-old Spanish youth Paul died on July 15 of Juventus sarcoma. He suffered from the disease when he was 16 years old. In his letter to the Pope, Paul described his ill health in good and bad times and shared his testimony of faith.

(Vatican News Network) Pablo Alonso María de la Cruz Hidalgo, a 21-year-old Spanish youth, died of Juventus sarcoma on July 15. Paul knew that he could not go to Lisbon to participate in the World Youth Day. He did not know whether he was still alive when the pope met the young people participating in the World Youth Day in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, or whether he was already in heaven, with the one who “give him Much, much comforting him, and making him so happy” with the beloved Jesus.

Paul himself wrote a letter to Pope Francis during his lifetime, which was presented to the Pope on August 2. In his letter, he wrote, “I do not know whether I will be able to accompany you in prayer when you receive this letter, or whether God has called me to his infinite mercy. In this case, I hope He has allowed me to help you to celebrate in Heaven with what you call ‘noisy’, ‘joy’.

Paul passed away on July 15. He joined the Carmelites “on his deathbed” and made his vows in a hospital ward. For six years, Paul said, he felt his body weakened by the disease. Paul’s letter was presented to the Pope on his way from Rome to Lisbon by Eva Fernández, a journalist for the Spanish Internet radio station Cope.
