The metal festival Wacken Open Air has not allowed visitors since this morning because the site cannot handle more people. The organization reports this on the website. Due to heavy rains, the site has turned into a large mud pool.
Wacken Open Air is organized annually in Wacken, northern Germany, and is one of the largest metal festivals in the world. It starts today, but visitors also arrived on the site yesterday.
It is the first time in the history of the festival that a visitor stop has been announced. “We are very sad, but unfortunately the persistent, difficult weather conditions leave us no other choice,” writes the organisation.
For the visitors who are already on the site, the organization tries to keep the program going as much as possible.
Visitors critical
The public is critical and outraged at the decision. Some visitors had waited hours for the entrance to the site, or had traveled a long way. It is not yet clear whether anything will be arranged for those who cannot use their ticket now.
Originally it was expected that about 85,000 metal fans would go to the festival. It is not clear how many there are now. “I hope we have half or even more in,” co-founder Thomas Jensen told the German news agency DPA yesterday.
The organization announced yesterday that no more cars will be allowed in the swampy parts of the site. This also led to dissatisfaction among visitors.
