Instagram Takes Steps to Identify and Flag AI-generated Photos

Even Meta itself knows that Instagram can be a psychological problem for many people. The established beauty canon can generate many complexes, especially in the youngest. And the worst is that not everything we see there is real. The editing apps or the numerous filters that these apps already natively integrate are to blame.

These have recently been joined by AI (Artificial Intelligence). However, from Meta they seem to be clear about their goal of identify and flag photos taken with AI and uploaded to Instagram. At least that’s what it seems in view of a label that has already been referenced.

“Be careful, this photo is not real”

Las photos generated with artificial intelligence are becoming more and more realistic. so much that It may be that every day we find dozens of unreal photographs generated with it and we haven’t even realized it. And it’s not a bad thing either. However, it can be conflictive in a certain way, both due to the psychological effects that we mentioned at the beginning, and due to the fact that it is not transparent with the public.

In these that the engineer Alessandro Paluzzi has discovered a Instagram tag marking a photo taken with AI. In it we discovered that the photograph can be labeled in this way by the user who uploads it to the network or by Meta through its detection systems.

For the moment, as Paluzzi also clarifies, it is about a feature that is still in development. It is not clear if there are really users to whom this function already appears or simply the engineer has found it through the app code. What does seem evident is that from Meta they want to fight, not against the AI, but against the deception that it can generate.

It should be said that it is not the first time that we have learned of Meta’s intentions to highlight a certain type of content on Instagram. At the beginning of 2020, controversy broke out due to labels that allegedly they were going to mark the images generated with Photoshop. And we say “allegedly” because we are not aware that this occurred three years later.

We will therefore see how events unfold and if Instagram finally adds this identification of content generated by artificial intelligence. What seems clear is that, if it arrives, it will be something interesting in many ways.
