Panama’s first ever

Panama had never scored in the World Cup.
Then Marta Cox shocked world team France with a dream free kick at the crossbar.
The match was not even two minutes old when Panama’s players could throw themselves in a heap of joy.
The country’s first World Cup goal, which came after 67 seconds, was the fastest so far in the 2023 World Cup.
Free kick on the cross
It may also have been the most beautiful goal of the tournament.
Marta Cox curled her free kick around France’s wall and the ball sat perfectly in the left crossbar.
Cox broke down in tears even before her teammates could get to her to celebrate the shock lead.
France turned
The Panamanian joy was great but relatively short-lived.
France quickly turned the game around and by the time Kadidiatou Diani scored her second penalty at the start of the second half, she had scored a hat-trick and France led 5–1.
Despite the French dominance, Panama would also get to celebrate their second World Cup goal. Yomira Pinzón reduced it to 2–5 on penalties midway through the second half.
