Former star Dani Alves faces court in Spain on suspicion of sexual assault. The Supreme Court of Catalonia confirmed the charges against the Brazilian ex-professional of FC Barcelona, the French news agency AFP. The start date for the trial against the 40-year-old, who has been imprisoned in Barcelona since the beginning of the year due to allegations of rape by a woman, has not yet been set.
Alves, who was part of Brazil’s squad at the World Cup in Qatar last year, is said to have sexually abused the woman in the toilet of a nightclub in Barcelona last December. In Spanish law, the offense of sexual assault also includes allegations of rape.

Alves initially protested his innocence several times during the initial investigation. However, last spring, the former Barca defender admitted to having a sexual relationship with the plaintiff, but continued to deny any allegations of violence.
After two unsuccessful requests for parole, which were rejected because of “high risk of absconding”, Alves again presented himself as innocent last June in his first interview since the allegations were made public with the newspaper La Vanguardia: “I have a really clear conscience, what what is happening in the washroom of the nightclub. I didn’t force the woman to do anything we did,” the South American explained.

Regardless of the outcome of the pending trial, his career is likely to be over for good. The contract of the veteran, who has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona and the South American Championship twice with Brazil, was terminated shortly after the allegations against Alves were made with the Mexican first division club Pumas UNAM. In total, Dani Alves has won 42 titles in his career. (sid/mg)
