– We are pleased to have already offered 17,380 students a safe home before the start of their studies. There are over 1,000 more students than last year, says chairman Audhild Kvam of the Confederation Council.

They have now collected figures from all the student associations in Norway. As of 1 August, 15,893 students are still queuing to get student housing – a few weeks before the start of their studies.

– We have built more, and the survey confirms this. At the same time, we see the need for more student housing in the future, says Kvam.

At the same time last year, 14,205 students were in the housing queue, but the co-ordinators emphasize that the reporting was somewhat different.

The queues are largest at Studentsamskipnaden SiO in Oslo, where 7150 are waiting for student housing and 4129 have been allocated housing.

At the Students’ Association in Western Norway, 3,289 students are on the housing queue, 2,917 of them in Bergen. There, 3,332 have been offered student accommodation as of 1 August.

NSO: – Pressured rental market

The Norwegian Student Organization (NSO) believes that the long queues for student accommodation in several places in Norway show a looming crisis in the rental market.

– The fact that 15,893 students are on the housing queue illustrates how under pressure the rental market is, says manager Oline Marie Sæther in NSO.

At the same time, she is happy to hear that 1,000 more students have been offered housing than at the same time last year.

– The associations play an important role in offering many students a safe, good and affordable home during their studies, she says.

VG has previously written about the chaos on the rental market.

Will build more

The student associations also note that there is a pressured rental market and that demand is high at several study centres.

– It is a stressful situation with increasingly expensive housing in the private rental market. It hits the students extra hard, says Kvam in the Confederation Council.

She wants even closer cooperation with the municipalities and the state to get more student accommodation built.

– I encourage student municipalities to sit down with their associations and make good plans for how to secure even more student housing in the future, says the chairman.
