When the police in West Yorkshire in England posted a picture of their two new police recruits on social media, they were probably not prepared for the reaction they would get.
– We welcome Alfie and Noah to the Kirklees district, wrote Chief Constable Helen Brear in the post, which was shared on Twitter.

The reactions hailed
It didn’t take long before the reactions started pouring in – and they weren’t of the positive kind. Many pointed out that the recruits looked young.
– 1000 percent certain that these were bullied at school, writes one.
– Has the pension become so bad that they have to start when they are 12?, writes another.
– What happens when the school holidays are over?, writes a third.
– Should I notify child welfare about this?, writes a fourth.
– Really disappointed
Now Superintendent Brear has even taken to social media to defend their new colleagues.

– I am really disappointed by some of the reactions that have come in after my post. Both of my colleagues have passed the recruitment process and shown that they have the skills needed. Both will become good police officers, and I, as their leader, will ensure that they reach their full potential, she writes.

Other police officers have also stepped in to defend the two young recruits, writes The Telegraph. Among them is Caroline Goode.
– They will get a lot of beatings on the street to look young, just like I did. Some feel they can do whatever they want, but soon find out they are wrong. They’ll be just fine. Wish them luck, and ask them to enjoy their youthful appearance while it lasts, she writes.
Three years of education
Chief Constable Chris Casey of the British Transport Police also supports the young recruits and welcomes them warmly.
– When I started as an 18-year-old with the police in Aston, I looked very young. It was a steep learning curve, but looking young didn’t hold me back.

According to The Telegraph, police students can apply as 17-year-olds, but must be 18 to join the police force.
The education takes three years. The students are taught through a combination of theoretical and practical teaching.
