Serious Truck Accident Causes Significant Damage to Railway Bridge, Causing Frustration in Travel

The careless truck driver probably didn’t expect that: his crash with the railway bridge, which was far too low for him, caused great frustration in travel.

What is probably the biggest annoyance in Frankfurt traffic at the moment is dragging on – and its effects will continue to be felt in long-distance traffic operated by Deutsche Bahn: ten days after the serious truck accident on the railway bridge in Sachsenhausen, an expert report revealed significant damage to the structure.

The bridge on the Mörfelder Landstraße should probably be closed for two months for the upcoming repairs, said a railway spokesman on Tuesday. And that means that the delays in long-distance rail traffic that have been in place for days will remain in place.

Effects on long-distance rail traffic

The railway bridge, over which the double-track route “Frankfurt Stadion – Frankfurt Süd” and the single-track connecting curve “Forsthaus – Frankfurt Niederrad” lead, will initially remain closed to rail traffic. “As a result, individual ICE/IC lines are still traveling on alternative routes with about 20 minutes longer travel time,” it said.

S and regional traffic is largely unaffected by the bridge closure. According to the information, long-distance trains cannot always stop at Frankfurt Central Station and Mannheim Central Station. Alternatively, the trains would stop in Frankfurt Süd and Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof. From there it is possible to continue your journey, for example with local public transport.

Crash on the Mörfelder Landstrasse: What happened?

The trailer truck loaded with an excavator hit the railway bridge the weekend before last. The truck clearly exceeded the permissible vehicle height of 4.7 meters in the accident, the police had announced. The 37-year-old driver of the semitrailer and his passenger of the same age were unharmed.

According to the railway, the web and floor panels were deformed inwards by up to six centimeters as a result of the impact. In addition, the so-called web plates were torn off over a length of more than 60 centimeters in two parts of the bridge. In addition, the truck not only caused the structure to warp, but also tore holes up to twelve centimeters in the structure.
