Emmendingen: 23-year-old threatens with gas bottle – arrest

Police forces provisionally arrested a 23-year-old man on Monday, July 31, 2023, in Emmendingen. A witness told the police around 8 a.m. that the man had stolen a gas bottle from a covered seat in the Neubronnstraße area and was threatening to set the bottle on fire.
The man was found shortly thereafter on the sidewalk in Neubronnstraße near the railway tracks. He carried a lighter with him and used it to repeatedly ignite gas, which he let flow from the gas bottle into his mouth. He also carried a jackknife, which he occasionally held in his hand.
The man did not heed multiple requests from the police to turn off the gas bottle, but lit it and directed the flame in the direction of the police forces deployed. The 23-year-old was then brought to the ground at a favorable moment using irritant spray and arrested.
The gas bottle that was burning at this point ignited a hedge, and the fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire. Nobody was injured. The detainee, who appears to have burned his arm himself, was taken to a hospital for treatment and was subsequently placed in a psychiatric facility.
