LIVE Techno – Russian scientists have succeeded in cultivating watermelons in the coldest place on the planet – at the Vostok Antarctic station – using panoponic or soilless technology, according to an announcement by the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI).
“Scientists of the 68th Russian Antarctic Expedition from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, together with their colleagues from the Institute of Agrophysical Research and the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, successfully completed the first experiment on growing watermelons at the Antarctic station Vostok — the coldest place on Earth, AARI said in a statement.
The polar explorer managed to grow eight ripe and sweet watermelons in 103 days using soilless panoponic technology.
“Apart from the scientific interest and the immediate practical benefits in the form of fresh vegetables, berries and herbs, our joint project has a number of important additional advantages,” he said.

AARI Director Alexander Makarov said the greenhouse at the station had the positive effect of spending months as an isolated group, in conditions of a polar night, low temperatures and limited living space.
The Institute also announced plans to develop technology for growing blackberries, blueberries and strawberries in Antarctica, according to the Sputnik Globe website, Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
This experiment growing vegetable crops at the Vostok station titled ‘Rastenia’ (plant in Russian) has been going on since February 2020. Last season, Russian polar explorers grew about 62 pounds of tomatoes and 20 pounds of pepper.
