The month is named after the emperor Octavian Augustus. Before that, it was called sextilis. Initially, sextilis had only 30 days, but Augustus increased it to 31 days so that it would not be shorter than the month of July, named after Julius Caesar. An extra day was taken from February. In Ireland, August is considered the first month of autumn.
