The Prosecutor’s Request for Release in Controversial Stara Zagora Case Sparks Public Outrage

The prosecutor, who was present at the initial remand of Georgi Georgiev, himself requested that the accused be released. This is what lawyer Vladislav Velichkov said in the program “The Day ON AIR”.

He commented on the case from Stara Zagora, which caused thousands of citizens to protest in several cities of the country. According to Adv. Velichkov, the prosecutor in the case, agreed that it was a matter of minor bodily injury and therefore the accused should be released.

“The court came to the conclusion that the act was committed with particular cruelty. The court could have applied the text from the Criminal Code that in this case it is a crime of a general nature,” explained the lawyer.
“In just two days, public discontent erupted. The state of the judicial system in Bulgaria is such that it works quite selectively, quite negligently and by external order, be it political or oligarchical,” commented Velichkov.

He added that the behavior of the magistrates from the court in Stara Zagora was such that they were not obliged to explain their actions.

According to Velichkov, “a deceptive calmness of the magistrates, that they can form their inner conviction beyond the law and that their decisions are not subject to comment” has settled in the entire judicial system. He clarified that the minutes of the meeting at which Georgiev was released only appeared today, which is almost a month after the incident.

“What is happening in Stara Zagora creates a sense of selective justice. Only after a friend of the family raised the alarm about what was happening did the court start to publish, which shows that they are stupid. Why was the hearing on the measure closed? Why was there no transparency in how decisions are made in court?” asked the lawyer. According to him, public pressure has achieved its result.

“Suddenly now they remembered, one month later, to investigate his (Georgi’s, note ed.) posts on Facebook, to investigate threats that were sent, of murder. Why didn’t they remember a month ago? If they did doubted the conclusions of the examination, why did they not order a complex? Because this can be qualified even as grievous bodily harm. When these blows were inflicted, probably as a result of disorder and affect in the actions of the perpetrator, was the loss of blood not dangerous for life? It’s about a fractured nose, how can that not be mean bodily harm?” insisted the lawyer.

Velichkov added that the judge saw that Georgi was sentenced to probation, which indicates a relapse, and in this case there were grounds for his detention.
