European Car Sales See Significant Increase: Tesla, MG, and Škoda Make Big Gains

European car sales increased significantly year-on-year. The biggest jumps in market coverage are Tesla, MG and Škoda.

Tesla continues its successful campaign in Europe. After all, this is also shown by the sales results for the first half of 2023, when the Model Y crossover became the most popular passenger vehicle on the old continent. The brand as such has also improved significantly.

This year, Tesla sold a total of 185,238 vehicles on the European market, which represents year-on-year growth of 117 percent. From 1.53 percent of the market, Tesla has now acquired 2.82% of the European market. With its sales, Tesla ranked 16th, but for the sake of completeness, let’s add that the first was Volkswagen (694,176), followed by Toyota (417,220) and Audi (374,435). Škoda finished eighth (339,382).

The best-selling model for the first half of 2023 was the Tesla Model Y with total sales of 136,564 units, which means year-on-year growth of 204 percent. Dacia Sandero finished in second place (123,408), followed by VW T-Roc (111,692 units). Škoda Octavia finished in 14th place with 77% growth, which was the second best after Tesla.

New car registrations in Europe were overall 17% higher in the first half of the year than in the previous year. Specifically, this means the registration of 6.56 million vehicles compared to 5.59 million vehicles in the previous year.

Among the biggest year-on-year jumps, i.e. in terms of market share, an interesting name appeared. The first Tesla, which improved from 1.53% coverage to 2.82% coverage, is followed by the MG brand, which improved year-on-year from 0.82% market coverage to 1.59% market coverage. The difference of 0.77 also surpassed the Mladá Boleslav car manufacturer, which moved from 4.62% to 5.17%.

MG uses both the brand’s reputation in the West and the competitiveness of the Chinese market to its advantage,” described Jato Dynamics Global Analyst Felipe Munoz. “Its attractive, modern and affordable electric cars in both Western and Eastern markets are a good example of how Chinese manufacturers can gain more ground and change the perception of their products.
