New York City Plans to Ban Vendors from Brooklyn Bridge Crosswalks

New York City plans to propose a new rule this summer that will ban vendors from the crosswalks of all bridges in the city, including the famous and busy Brooklyn Bridge.

Although bicycles have been redirected to the street level of the bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway sometimes becomes so congested that pedestrians are stranded, especially in the narrower sections.

Dozens of street vendors, sometimes taking up about a third of the space on the pedestrian walkway, contribute to the crowding.

The city already temporarily removed vendors from the bridge in January, after a dangerous crowding situation occurred on New Year’s Day. “Brooklyn Bridge is currently a stampede hazard. No one seems to be monitoring the crowds. It was terrifying,” Kathy Park Price tweeted, accompanying the posting of a photo showing a congestion of people as far as the eye could see.

They seek to improve the tourist image

The goal of the proposed new rule is to improve the safety and experience of pedestrians crossing the iconic bridge, especially for the thousands of tourists who visit the city and want to enjoy the walk on the iconic bridge without feeling overwhelmed by the crowds. of sellers.

Details about the implementation and the exact date the ban would take effect have not yet been announced.

The municipal authorities are expected to carry out an awareness campaign before applying the measure so that both vendors and pedestrians are informed of the changes.

The congestion and risks associated with the large number of vendors on the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway have been a growing concern, and this new initiative is expected to be well received by citizens and visitors who want to enjoy one of the most iconic monuments. New York safely and pleasantly.
