Jakarta –
Abu Jahl Al Makhzumi’s name has been engraved in the pages of Islamic history. The nickname “Abu Jahl,” which means “father of ignorance,” is used to describe a time when the Arab community was in a state of ignorance and disbelief in Allah SWT, most of them worshiping idols.
Quoted from the book Get Smart Islamic Religious Education written by Udin Wahyudin, it is explained that Abu Jahal Al Makhzumi was one of the most influential figures in the Quraysh tribe, a prominent community group in Mecca at that time. However, his reputation is more widely known for his very opposing and hostile attitude to the Prophet Muhammad.
Not only known as someone who opposed Islamic teachings, Abu Jahal Al Makhzumi also had an arrogant nature. His arrogant attitude and feeling that he was superior to others, further strengthened Abu Jahal’s image as a tyrannical figure.
The Battle of Badr became one of the important events in the history of Islam, in which the adherents of Islam managed to defend themselves and won the battle against the opponents. In the battle of Badr, Abu Jahl was involved in it.
Although Abu Jahal Al Makhzumi continues to try to block the propagation of Islam, history proves that Islamic teachings continue to grow rapidly.
The story of Abu Jahl
Quoted from the book The Dahsyatnya of Repentance: 42 Stories of People Who Repent, it is told that there was a king in Makkah who felt grateful to Rasulullah SAW for making him believe. Long story short, Rasulullah SAW made him believe by the miracle of splitting the moon and putting it back together.
As an expression of gratitude to God and appreciation to the Prophet SAW, this king then gave a very abundant gift to the Prophet SAW.
He prepared five camels carrying gold, silver, and cloth to be presented to the Prophet SAW, as well as some slaves to be given to him. However, when the gift-delivering group approached the city of Makkah, Abu Jahl stopped them and asked who the items were for.
One of the entourage replied that all of these items were addressed to the Prophet, but Abu Jahl refused and wanted to seize them. Finally, there was a fight between the gift delivery party and Abu Jahl and his flock.
This commotion only died down after the residents of Makkah and the Prophet’s uncles intervened. The slaves who were presented to the Prophet stated that the treasure was indeed for the Prophet Muhammad.
However, Abu Jahl still insisted that the gift was actually intended for him, trying to claim it as his own. Rasulullah SAW who was also present spoke to the residents of Mecca, asking if they still believed in it. They replied that they still believed in him.
Then, the Prophet suggested that this problem be resolved by asking directly the camels that brought gifts. If they were a gift to the Prophet Muhammad, then the camels would give an honest answer.
However, Abu Jahal rejected the proposal and asked that this matter be postponed until tomorrow. The Prophet agreed with the proposal.
The next day, Abu Jahl went to the idol temple and prayed fervently to the idols until morning, hoping to get support from the idols.
However, when the sun rose, all the inhabitants of Mecca gathered at the place where the gifts from the king were presented. The Prophet was also present there. Abu Jahl appeared confident and asked the camels to speak on behalf of his idols, namely Latta, Uzza and Manat.
None of the camels gave the answer Abu Jahal asked for. In fact, one of the camels spoke in an amazingly loud voice that everyone present could understand. He said that they were a gift from the king, namely Habib bin Malik for Muhammad SAW.
After that, the camel was brought by Rasulullah to Mount Abu Qubais. All the contents of the cargo of gold, silver and cloth were hailed into one heap. Rasulullah declared to the pile of precious gifts, “Be you land.” Then, miraculously, the gold, silver, and cloth that came from Habib bin Malik’s gift turned into soil, and that miracle is still happening today.
