During the Angelus prayer on the last Sunday of July, the Pope invited the faithful not to close themselves in stereotypes, not to be content with mediocrity, but to realize that the true treasure of life is the encounter with God and with others. Jesus, the Pope emphasized, is a true treasure worth seeking out, worth giving everything to possess him, because when you meet him, your life will change.
(Vatican News Network) Seek, find, buy: these are the three actions of the merchant in the parable of the Gospel of Sunday, July 30: he goes in search of a precious pearl, finds the pearl to be of great value, sells all his possessions, buys Pearls were dropped (cf. Mt 13:44-52). Pope Francis explained the content of this Gospel before leading the believers gathered in St. Peter’s Square to read the Angelus. He pointed out that the quest of the brave businessman “is an invitation to us not to close ourselves in the stereotypes”, not to be content with mediocrity, but to work hard “to cultivate beautiful ideals and to seek the novelty of God”. God “is not a God who repeats” but “always brings newness”, “newness of the Spirit” and “refreshes the realities of life”.
“Every day, at home or away, at work or on vacation, we have the opportunity to see beautiful things. It is important to know how to find the important things: train yourself to recognize the treasures in your life and associate them with mundane things. Let us not waste our time and freedom on trifles and pastimes that leave us empty inside, but on the precious treasures of our daily encounters with God and others!”
The merchant in the parable of the Gospel chose to sell everything and sacrifice everything to buy the pearl he found because he “realized its great value,” the pope noted. This reminds people to further evaluate what is most precious and important.
So, the Pope said: “What is that pearl that the Lord told us that can make us give up everything? This pearl is Himself, the Lord! Seek the Lord, find the Lord, meet the Lord And be with him. The pearl is Jesus: he is the precious pearl of life, worth seeking, discovering and having. he is worth all that we have in him, because when you meet him, your life will change …
Finally, the Pope invited everyone to do self-reflection, look for and discern what is “good and from God” in their own lives, and ask themselves: “Am I spiritually retiring? There are many young People are getting old before they get old.” The Pope also urges us to reflect on whether we can put Christ first in everything and give up those things that are of no importance.
Ending his Gospel exposition, the Pope called on the Virgin Mary to “help us seek, find and embrace Jesus with all our strength”.
