Lionel Messi Honors Diego Maradona and Wins 2022 World Cup: Background and Future Plans

Lionel Messi was able to continue the performances of his legendary compatriot Diego Maradona by winning the 2022 World Cup.

WHAT HAPPENED? Lionel Messi has honored Diego Maradona with a retro Argentina 1994 World Cup jersey.

WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND? Messi led his home country to glory in Qatar, just like Diego Maradona did at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Messi was now alluding to Maradona’s last appearance at the FIFA tournament that took place in North America 29 years ago.

Maradona is considered one of the greatest players football has ever seen – and Messi also belongs to this group due to his remarkable career. Maradona, who had 91 caps for Argentina, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60.

Messi, who continues to play for the Albiceleste and has scored 103 goals in 175 games, has already hinted that he will not take part in another World Cup – 2026 will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
