On July 26, 2023, Niger experienced a military coup. The putschists deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the coup and took punitive measures against the putschists on July 30, 2023.
ECOWAS has imposed travel bans and frozen the assets of the following people:
Military personnel involved in the coup Their family members Civilians who participate in the institutions or government created by the coup perpetrators
ECOWAS also announced the closure of land and air borders of ECOWAS countries in Niger.
The measures taken by ECOWAS are a blow to the perpetrators of this coup in Niger. They will make it difficult for them to travel and finance the regime. They will also isolate Niger on the international scene.
