Murcia Invests 6.8 Million Euros in Pneumococcal Vaccine: Acquiring 140,000 Doses for 2023 and 2024

Murcia is equipped with more vaccines. The regional government will invest 6.8 million euros in the contracting of pneumococcal vaccines during the next two years, as stated in the profile of the community contractor.

Specifically, the regional Executive will contract the supply of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines of twenty serotypes (twenty-valent) for the vaccination program of the Region of Murcia corresponding to 2023 and 2024.

The Murcian government plans to purchase a total of 140,000 doses of this type of pneumococcal vaccine. According to the contract, half of the doses will be distributed in 2023 and the other half next year.

All those over 65 years of age and those over 18 years of age with certain risk conditions, such as chronic lung disease, chronic liver disease, cardiovascular disease, asthma or diabetes mellitus, are especially susceptible to pneumococcal disease and present a more serious condition. So are immunocompromised adults.

Pneumococcal disease manifests as meningitis, sepsis, or pneumonia and is caused by pneumococcus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. Appears in healthy people or those who are debilitated by chronic diseasessuch as heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, diabetes or alcoholism, as well as in convalescents from acute infectious processes such as influenza.

In Murcia, it is estimated that there are 3,000 cases of acquired pneumonia in people over 64 years of age each year, the majority caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, which may mean some 2,200 hospital admissions and 390 deaths annually. In addition to the disease burden, it generates significant costs, since admitted patients alone would cause around 23,000 days of hospital stay.

Murcia joins other communities that, over the past few months, have invested in pneumococcal vaccines. This is the case of the Balearic Islands, which has allocated 3.2 million euros to the purchase of doses for 2023 and 2024.

For its part, Castilla-La Mancha has acquired 150,000 doses of pneumococcal vaccine for 6.8 million euros. In the case of the Manchego region, the vaccines belong to the US laboratory Pfizer.
