CODEINE: The Transborder Concert in Villeurbanne – September 6, 2023

CODEINE THE TRANSBORDER Villeurbanne, September 6, 2023, Villeurbanne.

CODEINE LE TRANSBORDEUR takes place on the date of 2023-09-06 at 20:00:00.
Price: 22 to 22 euros.

At the turn of the 90s, CODEINE opened the door to slowcore with their first album ‘Frigid Stars’. Slow rhythms, suffocating or life-saving silences, sonic tears sublimate a deep existential malaise. The New York trio establish a new rock aesthetic, powerful and vulnerable, slow and heavy like an endless afternoon of adolescent boredom, where darkness dominates and light surfaces without ever really breaking through.Known for being one of the the only ones to play more slowly on stage than on record, CODEINE will have had an existence as short as its influence was great, and its persistent cult. The archivist label Numero Group made no mistake about it, devoting a sublime retrospective box to it in 2012 , then by publishing last year the true second album of the group (and its masterpiece), ‘Dessau’, composed of pieces recorded 30 years earlier, already released for the most part but never appeared in their initial version. On this occasion, the trio gave some sold-out concerts in the United States, which convinced them to return to Europe. This time, the tour will stop in France, which had not been the case during the previous reunion in 2012. These will therefore be CODEINE’s first concerts with us since… 1994, with the original line-up including vocalist/bassist Stephen Immerwahr, guitarist John Engle, and prolific drummer Chris Brokaw (Come, The New Year, Martha’s Vineyard Ferries). An unexpected chance to find this abyssal melancholy on stage, and to measure the decisive influence that the group could have had far beyond slowcore on a whole part of the rock and post-rock scene, marked by these alternations of clean guitars or saturated images suspended above the void, from Low to Mogwai via Red House Painters, Duster, Diabologum or Mendelson.
