The Danish government wants to look at possibilities to limit protest actions. These are protests in which other religions, cultures and countries are deliberately insulted, such as by burning the Quran.
The government believes that the protests could have significant negative consequences for Denmark, especially for security in the country.
There is a constitutional right to freedom of expression. Nevertheless, the government wants to be able to intervene in special cases, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the Copenhagen news agency on Sunday Ritzau.
Earlier in the day, Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan called on his Swedish colleague Tobias Billström by telephone to take concrete measures against Islamophobia. According to Fidan, such “despicable actions” under the guise of free speech are not acceptable.
