North American photography is like every year present in force at the Rencontres de la photographie in Arles. This summer, two heritage proposals attract attention: the one dedicated by the Luma Foundation to Diane Arbus (1923-1971), for a Constellation in the form of an astonishing immersive installation offering prints for some previously unseen, and the one dedicated to Saul Leiter (1923-2013), through Assemblages offering to see a mosaic of small formats testifying to the sensitive and sometimes offbeat approach of a photographer and painter who will have been one of the keenest observers of daily life in New York. And there is also, on the sidelines of these tributes, the spectacular monstration of four series by Gregory Crewdson, whose skilfully staged large formats are like films in the making.
