However, Ukraine and existing NATO members are not the only potential beneficiaries of Ukraine’s membership in NATO. Even Russia, which invaded Ukraine under the pretext of preventing alliance expansion, has much to gain from this perspective. Ukraine’s accession to NATO would allow Russia to spend less resources on the production and stockpiling of ammunition. While the Kremlin’s obsession with rebuilding the Russian empire won’t disappear overnight, its decision-making influence could diminish. As with Finland’s recent accession, once Ukraine’s accession is a fact, it will no longer be a matter of contention.
While Ukraine joining NATO would be bad news for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his allies, it could bring significant benefits to the Russian people. With the dream of rebuilding the empire all but gone, future Russian leaders would find it increasingly difficult to use revanchist and isolationist rhetoric to consolidate power.
