An employee of the Aldi on the Hoofdstraat in Rijen was threatened by a customer on Sunday morning. The customer approached him with a knife and later tried to hit the employee with his car in the parking lot. The reason? A wrong price tag on the baguette, which made it seem 15 cents more expensive.
“You don’t expect something like that on a Sunday morning,” the Aldi employee sighs. He had been in the store in the morning changing the price tags of products that will no longer be on sale from Monday. “On the shelf, it then seems as if they are no longer on offer. This is not a problem for the customers, as their groceries sometimes turn out to be cheaper at the checkout,” the employee explains.
But one of the customers disagreed. When the Aldi employee walked out of the warehouse, the customer approached him angrily. “He had just done some shopping and said that we were a bunch of cheaters. He also said that we and all supermarkets should be destroyed and that he wanted to kill us,” says the employee.
“I jumped aside in time.”
“When I asked why he said that, it turned out to be a baguette.” The customer was angry because the price tag on his baguette was not clear enough. At the checkout it turned out to be cheaper than it was on the price tag. “It was a 15 cent discount, which he simply received at the checkout,” says the Aldi employee.
But there was no point in explaining that to the customer. “He walked away, but then turned around. He came back to me with a knife. It was a potato peeler.” When two other customers came to the rescue, the suspect quickly ran away. But he didn’t let it go. “He got in his car and tried to run me over. I jumped out of the way in time.”
The fear was there, says the employee. He called the police and reported the threat. Because the suspect drove a striking car, fellow villagers were able to point out who it was and where he lived. The customer was arrested a few hours later. He is still in custody pending further investigation, according to police.
