Elderly Hiker Survives Terrifying Fall in Cantal Mountains

A 67-year-old man from Gironde lost his balance during the dizzying passage of the Breche de Rolland, on the GR400 in Cantal, Sunday July 30, shortly before noon. The hiker fell and descended the north face over 70 meters of elevation, towards the buron d’Eylac.

Conscious but seriously injured

Three rescuers from the Murat High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) immediately went to the scene and were joined on site by a Samu doctor transported by the gendarmerie helicopter. This same helicopter then took the victim to the Col de Serre where the Smur helicopter took over to the Gabriel-Montpied hospital in Clermont-Ferrand where the walker was transported.
