Sweden’s Prime Minister and Government Take Action to Address Koran Burning Crisis

Kristersson says so himself on his Instagram account.

– We find ourselves in the most serious security political situation since the Second World War, and here at home we know that both states, state-like actors and individuals can exploit the situation, writes the Swedish Prime Minister.

It is further stated in the post that Sweden and Denmark are two of the world’s most well-functioning democracies.

– We stand up for freedom of expression and freedom of demonstration. We have a strong tradition of respecting other people and different beliefs. Freedom of religion is an obvious cornerstone of our society, writes Kristersson.

The legislation

Sweden’s Minister of Labor and Integration Johan Pehrson opens up to looking at the legislation to put an end to the Koran burnings in Sweden.

– We know that our situation is being exploited by forces that want nothing but good for Sweden, he said last week.

Pehrson believes that if the threats to Sweden become greater and more extensive, it is important to ask the question whether the law should be changed.

Furthermore, he says that Sweden must also become better at explaining how a society can combine freedom of religion and expression to people who move to Sweden from Muslim countries.

The Swedish government has also been in contact with the foreign ministers of several Muslim countries, including Iran, Iraq, Algeria and Lebanon, to try to mitigate the crisis.

Turkey condemns

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan asks Sweden’s government to take concrete steps to prevent Koran burning, says a source in the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

In a telephone conversation on Sunday, Fidan is said to have told his Swedish counterpart, Tobias Billström, that a continuation of such abhorrent actions under the guise of freedom of expression is unacceptable, says the source.
