Laura Krumova’s interview with the Minister of Finance Asen Vassilev on Nova TV began with great laughter. The reason for this was a previous report from a Bulgarian village and the presenter’s attempt to quote the speech of one of the participants.
Krumova found it difficult and began to laugh, reading the words in dialect of the person in question regarding Kiril Petkov: “People lit Kiro with a ball to Shipka, that’s why he wants to put May 24.”
Saying this, the host burst out laughing. Asen Vassilev couldn’t help himself and laughed too. It took them a while to calm down.
According to Vassilev, there is no more unifying holiday than May 24.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a slide. I am very much in favor of the national holiday being May 24.”
When asked how he evaluates the adopted budget, he replied: “Usually on the math tests, higher than that, I usually take them.”
“The budget is doable in this form. We were able to protect a large part of the revenue-related measures. The expenses were quite reasonably made,” said the Minister of Finance. “It’s certainly not a bloated budget, it’s a normal budget,” he added.
“The question is not whether the budget is inflated, but what we will get in return”, he pointed out and gave an example of the budget of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where 150 million BGN more is requested. He explained that he did not receive an answer to these questions when he had conversations with management.
Regarding the budget for culture, he said: “Money in a bag is not given. It must be clear what these funds will be used for.” Vasilev pointed out that according to the existing practice, community centers are given funds per square meter, and not per cultural activity performed.
The minister also explained how the transfer of salaries will happen via bank transfer without additional bank fees. According to him, a “basic account will be opened, which every bank will start offering from September 1. Every Bulgarian can open one. There will be absolutely no fee.”
Vassilev commented on the budget vote in the parliament: “Everything passed without the receipt in restaurants, in general terms. This is a very nice measure, it has been applied in Greece since 2015, and it helped a lot to lighten the economy”.
“There were certain corporate interests that are not at all happy that the economy is starting to lighten up. Revivalists also voted against the tax laws. “There is such a people” also voted against.
He clarified what will change with these measures: “The dividend will go to the bank, the cash register will be reported every 3 months, the NRA will see it and will be able to tighten control.”
“We have pledged 2.5 times more taxes than the cabinet had pledged. With the same growth and the same macro framework,” Vasilev pointed out.
Regarding the Recovery Plan funds, he said: “What we have found is that the renegotiation that was passed as a decision of Parliament has not actually happened. Now we have to finish this whole renegotiation in a very short period of time, plus there were unwritten laws”.
“This means there will be no holidays. August and September will have to work. The parliament will work until 1, until 2 in the morning,” he added.
According to Vasilev, the cooperation with GERB and DPS in the parliament is going very hard.
