Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Warns of Potential Use of Nuclear Weapons in Ukraine Counteroffensive

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that Russia would have to use nuclear weapons if the ongoing counteroffensive in Ukraine was successful, Reuters reported. Mevedev had previously raised concerns about a nuclear conflict in Ukraine.

Mevedev is currently vice-chairman of Russia’s National Security Council, which is led by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reuters pointed out that Medvedev has always portrayed himself as one of the most hawkish opinion figures in Russia.

Mevedev pointed out through his official social media account that if the Ukrainian counterattack is successful with the support of NATO, a large number of existing Russian territories will be deprived. As a result, Russia will be forced to use nuclear weapons according to the Russian President’s decree.

Mevedev declared that if the Ukrainian army’s operation is successful, the use of nuclear weapons is the only option, “so our enemy (Uzbekistan) should pray for our soldiers (victory). They are ensuring that the global nuclear war is not ignited.”

Mevedev’s remarks appeared to refer to a Russian nuclear policy that would, in part, allow Russia to use nuclear weapons in response to aggression using conventional weapons that threatened the country’s very existence.
