Tidying up the shape of the eyebrows for some women is a natural thing to support their appearance. There are those who ask for expert help to tidy up by removing the eyebrow hairs one by one by themselves.
Although sometimes it will grow again after being removed, it is not uncommon for some to find that their eyebrow hair cannot grow back. What caused this to happen?
Before knowing the reason, we need to know what the stages of eyebrow hair growth are. Basically, Ali has three growth stages namely anagen, catagen, and telogen.
Anagen phase
Launching Live Science, anagen is an active growth stage where cells divide and increase in number. In the anagen stage, the hair follicle takes on an onion-like shape, then hair fibers begin to emerge from it.
The anagen phase of the eyebrows is shorter than the hair on the head, which is around 2-3 months. Meanwhile, head hair has a length of about two to eight years. This causes the eyebrow hair to be shorter than the hair on the head.
Fase Catagen
In this phase, hair growth slows down due to cell division and proliferation. This then causes cell death in the hair follicle, and the onion-like structure shrinks. This phase lasts 2-3 weeks.
Telogen phase
The final phase is telogen, which is where the hair stops growing and the follicle “rests”. This phase usually lasts longer for eyebrow hair than for head hair, which is around 4 months or more.
“At the end of the telogen phase, hair can fall out naturally, and new hair starts its cycle from the same follicle, entering the anagen phase,” said dr. Yoram Harth, medical director of MD hair, a hair loss treatment company, and former researcher at Columbia University quoted Live Science as saying.
Stem Cell Induced Growth
The continuous cycle in which the eyebrow hair grows back is due to the fact that the hair follicles are rich in stem cells. Stem cells can make them grow again and renew themselves.
Other factors that influence whether or not eyebrow hair grows back are aging, hormonal changes, and physical damage. Some of these things can sometimes make hair fall out easily.
“When hair follicles are damaged, they may not be able to produce new hair. The type and extent of the damage can determine whether this condition is temporary or permanent,” explains Harth.
