Crane Collapse in Manhattan: 12 Injured, Narrowly Avoiding Tragedy

The latest assessment of the fall of the crane in the heart of Manhattan is 12 injured but we came close to tragedy according to the mayor of New York, Eric Adams. The latter expressed his relief, while the fall of the jib of a crane, which struck a neighboring building before collapsing in the street, caused only 12 minor injuries. “We were lucky it didn’t happen at a time when there were more people,” Adams added.

New York Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Pfeifer said the device, which was working on the construction of a 45-story building, was lifting 16 tons of concrete when the cables were weakened by the cabin fire. The crane operator tried to put out the fire, but the flames were too large.

“The crane operator made it out and is safe and sound,” Pfeifer said. The fire department said it is investigating the accident, which occurred on 10th Avenue.

In 2016, a crane collapsed in Manhattan during a bout of high winds and snow, killing one person.
