Xinhua News Agency, Chengdu, July 29 (Reporters Zhang Hailei, Wu Jinfu, Mu Xiaoxiang) At 8:00 p.m. on the 28th, the opening ceremony of the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu was staged in the main stadium of Dong’an Lake Sports Park. At the opening ceremony, elements of Shu Brocade and Shu Embroidery became a recurring highlight. The director team of the opening ceremony specially invited the inheritors of Shu embroidery intangible cultural heritage to design and produce the entrance guide boards for the athletes.
The entrance sign is embroidered stitch by stitch on Shu brocade by Hao Shuping, a representative inheritor of Shu embroidery, a national intangible cultural heritage project, and a master of Chinese arts and crafts, and her studio members. The frame of the guide board is made of lacquer art patterns, and the fabric is made of sub-gold back pattern Shu brocade, with Ruyi patterns embroidered on the four corners with Shu embroidery technology; the center is embroidered with the emblem of the International University Sports Federation, the emblem of the current Universiade, and the Chinese and English names of the country.

“Shu embroidery with a long history is a representative cultural symbol of Chengdu. When Shu embroidery is combined with the Universiade, I believe that more young people can see the beauty of traditional Shu embroidery. We must complete this task well.” Hao Shuping said, receiving the opening ceremony After the task given by the director team, she and the studio members started working from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm every day. It took a month to complete the production of a Chinese team guide card.
Shu embroidery, also known as “Sichuan embroidery”, is called “four famous embroidery” in China together with Suzhou embroidery, Hunan embroidery and Yue embroidery. It has formed a unique charm with its bright and beautiful colors and exquisite and delicate stitches. According to Hao Shuping, there are 12 categories and 132 kinds of stitches in Shu embroidery, which is the most abundant among the four famous embroideries.

The color matching of silk thread not only tests the skill, but also requires experience. Hao Shuping said that when embroidering the guide board of the Chinese team, they incorporated a set of three colors for only the word “China”. Outside the layer, gray-blue silk thread is also used to “stroke” to complete the entire guide card, sharing 18 colors.
A silk thread in Shu embroidery is generally 16 silks, and beginners generally use 8 silks. When making guide cards, 4 wires are used the most. “The emblem has the floating tail of the sun god bird. In order to reflect this elegant feeling, we need to use 2 silk threads that are thinner than the hair.” Hao Shuping said that when embroidering, you must control the strength of your hands. If it is too tight, it will easily break the thread. .

The upper and lower ends of the guide board are patterns of the Great Wall, also known as “Wanbudu”. Hao Shuping said that the embroidery method here tests the basic skills. If the angle is not well controlled, it is easy to embroider crookedly, and the straight line becomes oblique.
Hao Shuping has been dealing with Shu embroidery for more than 60 years. In addition to inheriting the traditional stitching method taught by her master, she also innovated the “flat-hand drawn flower needle” and created the single-sided embroidery technique of oil painting, which expanded the copy of Shu embroidery from flowers, plants and animals to the field of oil painting. At present, more than 20 works have been collected by museums at home and abroad. After retiring from the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory, Hao Shuping set up a studio, and also cooperated with the Vocational College to set up a Shu Embroidery major, and trained many Shu Embroidery talents.
