Blizzard’s Diablo series challenger in the form of free-to-play RPG Path of Exile has been troubling its competitor for a decade. In November 2019, the developers from the New Zealand studio Grinding Gear Games announced a sequel, which, however, was not supposed to become a second part in the true sense of the word. More specifically, they wanted to continue on the foundations of Path of Exile and use everything they had created over the years, but with a brand new campaign and replacing the first part, while still having the original campaign. This weekend the developers held their ExileCon 2023 event, live in New Zealand and of course online, where as part of the program they inform in detail about the news, which of course also concern the expected sequel. One is the announcement that Path of Exile 2 will eventually be a completely standalone title.
The developers said that Path of Exile 2 has changed and expanded a lot since they announced it. This is why they decided to rethink their plans. “This thing is freaking huge, and we just got to the point where we realized that if we replace Path of Exile with Path of Exile 2, we’re basically getting rid of a game that players love for no reason,” studio co-founder Jonathan Rogers said of the change of heart. “So we made a decision: Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2 will be separate, with their own mechanics, balance, endgame and leagues,” he added. Although they will be separate, they will not be isolated, which applies for example to microtransactions – purchases will apply to both games with exceptions where they will not be compatible, which will mainly apply retroactively for news that will only be offered by Path of Exile 2 and will not be available in the first part , as detailed by Rogers.
ExileCon 2023, in addition to the talks, of course also offered new videos that demonstrate some of the new information even better. The third big trailer introduced and summarized what players can look forward to in the sequel, and it’s not exactly a little. Path of Exile 2 will offer six new classes, which are Sorceress, Monk, Huntress, Mercenary, Warrior, Druid, as well as 36 ascendant classes, 600 new monsters, 100 bosses, 240 active skills, 1500 passive skills, a redesigned economy system, crafting, gems, skills and a number of new skills or new mechanics. During the presentation, dodge rolls received the greatest response among the audience. Another video from Path of Exile 2 was a half-hour of commentary gameplay that focused on the Monk class, showing off its considerable mobility in combat and the use of its abilities.
We also got the closed beta launch date, which may disappoint some eager fans, but the developers don’t want to rush anything. However, those interested will be able to try the game during Gamescom, where the studio is also headed. The Path of Exile 2 beta will not finally launch until next year, on June 7, 2024.
