Man Rescued from Drowning on Anglet Club Beach: Urgent News Update

A 72-year-old man was rescued Friday on the Club beach in Anglet. He was in cardio-respiratory arrest and was rushed to hospital in Bayonne.

The firefighters were called around 5:20 p.m., Friday July 28, to rescue a man drowning on the Club beach in Anglet (Pyrénées-Atlantiques). This beach is not supervised, and therefore prohibited for swimming. The 72-year-old bather found himself in difficulty. It was two surfers present at the scene and rescuers from a nearby aid station who first came to his aid.

When he was pulled out of the ocean, the man was in cardio-respiratory arrest. On the spot, the rescuers of the SMUR made him a cardiac massage. He was then transported in absolute urgency to the Bayonne hospital center. His shocked 65-year-old wife and 30-year-old son were taken to the same hospital.

In Gironde this time, two swimmers were rescued. In La Teste de Buch, a 26-year-old man was pulled out of the water by lifeguards on La Salie beach shortly before 4 p.m. Friday. The young man could no longer return to the edge. Stuck where the wave breaks, he was constantly pulled back, explained a rescuer from the station.

In Montalivet, another swimmer was taken care of by the rescuers around 5:45 p.m. Nothing serious, according to the lifeguards of the lifeguard station who explain that the man, who was at the edge of the water, fell because of a wave, and inhaled some water. For safety, the doctors preferred to transport him to the Lesparre clinic.

The aid stations of La Salie and Montalivet specify that these two interventions had nothing to do with the baïnes. Nevertheless, the risk remains maximum for the baïnes currents on the coast in the departments of Gironde, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes, and Charente-Maritime until Sunday July 30 inclusive. The prefecture called for the greatest vigilance.
