San Francisco launches investigation into Elon Musk’s ‘X’ sign atop former Twitter headquarters

The city of San Francisco has opened a complaint and launched an investigation into the giant “X” sign that was installed, Friday, atop the downtown building formerly known as Twitter’s headquarters, as the company’s new owner, Elon Musk, continues to rebrand the popular social media platform.

The billionaire, who bought Twitter, announced the name change this week. He tried to remove the famous Twitter sign and the blue bird on Monday, but the workers were stopped for safety reasons.

The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection said Musk would need permits to change the sign, and a spokesperson for the department said Musk still needs permits to make sure anything erected on top of the building is intact and securely installed.

Partik Hanan, a spokesperson for the Building Inspection Department, said earlier this week. Any alternate lettering or symbols will require a permit to ensure “consistency with the historic nature of the building” and to ensure the safety of the signage.

Placing a sign on top of a building also requires a permit, Hanan said Friday.

“Planning review and approval are also necessary to install this sign,” Hanan said in an email to Reuters, adding that “the city has opened a complaint and launched an investigation.”

Musk unveiled the new “X” logo to replace the iconic blue bird on Twitter as he reshapes the social media platform he bought for $44 billion last year. An “X” began appearing at the top of the desktop version of Twitter on Monday.

Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, has long been fascinated by the letter “X” and has already renamed Twitter to X Corp. After he bought it in Oct. And one of his children is called “X”. The baby’s actual name is a combination of letters and symbols.

In a series of posts on his Twitter account, the company’s owner said he was looking forward to making the change around the world, starting Monday.

The tweet viewing cap is part of an $8-a-month subscription service that Musk launched earlier this year in an effort to boost the platform’s revenue.

Revenue has fallen sharply since Musk took over the company and laid off nearly three-quarters of the workforce to cut costs and avoid bankruptcy.
