Inflation and high prices also affect tourism. According to the surveys by Demoskopika, the increase in inflation in the sector – which is estimated to be over 3% higher than that of the general Istat index – would generate increases equal to 3.9 billion in tourist spending by Italians and foreigners who have chosen to spend a holiday in the Italian resorts during the summer months. Above all, air transport (+23.5% compared to June 2022), holiday packages (+17.7%) and accommodation (+12.8%) weigh heavily.
Furthermore, the high prices that have hit tourism in Italy are greater than in France, Greece and Spain. In June of this year in transport services Italy recorded a +9.9% compared to a less significant increase in the same item for France (+6%), Greece (+1.4%) and, even in a significant decline in Spain (-16.1%). Furthermore, the acceleration of prices in accommodation and catering services (+7.5%) is more than significant, with an inflationary differential of the Italian tourism system of +1.9 percentage points compared to France (+5.6% ), by +1.8 percentage points compared to Greece (+5.7%) and by +1.5 percentage points compared to Spain (+6%).
The only exception is the product class comprising recreational and cultural services (museums, amusement parks, cultural events, etc.), with Italy recording an increase of 3.6% higher than Greece (+3.3% ) but less in France (+4.8%) and Spain (+4%).
