International Fencing Federation Abandons Mandatory Handshakes After Ukrainian Athlete’s Refusal

After the Ukrainian athlete refused to shake hands with the Russian one, the International Fencing Federation (FIE) decided to abandon the mandatory handshakes. Now it is proposed to exchange greetings at a distance. This is reported by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

“The traditional handshake at the end of the fight will be replaced by a greeting from a distance, which will allow the Ukrainians not to approach the Russians, even if they compete as neutrals,” the FIE intends. Sport24.

During the World Fencing Championships in Milan, Ukrainian Olga Harlan refused to shake hands with Russian athlete Anna Smirnova, reports RT. Smirnova, in turn, waited about an hour to be shaken by the hand. Since the Russian woman lost in the competition, she was not allowed to the second stage.

Harlan left championship due to violation of the rules, but soon returned. According to La Repubblica, everything was according to the rules. The newspaper refers to the coronavirus protocol in force at the tournament, according to which a Ukrainian woman could not shake hands with a Russian woman.
