Restricting calorie intake as you get older, in other words, is known as the secret to a healthy longevity. In fact, it has been found that people who live long and healthy have an active lifestyle while maintaining an appropriate amount of food on average.

However, in relation to eating habits, there is a study by the Institute for Healthy Aging at University College London (UCL) that eating a balanced meal with protein is more important for longevity than simply eating less.

The research team analyzed the downsides of a calorie-restricted diet and the health benefits of a protein-balanced diet in female fruit flies. In the meantime, animal experiments such as fruit flies, rats, and monkeys have revealed that reducing calorie intake is beneficial for lifespan extension. The basis is not certain, but in the case of humans, news is also known as the secret of longevity.

The research team found that although calorie restriction increases lifespan, it has the side effect of reducing fertility. Female fruit flies fed on a calorie-restricted diet had lower fertility and smaller baby flies. This is interpreted as an evolutionary feature that, when in a hungry state, focuses on survival rather than reproduction.

The research team fed female fruit flies the same amount of yeast sugar water, but varied the amount of key nutrients such as protein (amino acid), vitamins, and fat. The results showed that the amount of amino acids affected lifespan and fertility.

Among amino acids, methionine, one of the essential amino acids, was particularly effective in increasing lifespan without reducing fertility. The amount of other nutrients appeared to have no or little effect. Therefore, it was analyzed that a low-calorie diet enriched with methionine could increase lifespan without reducing fertility.

Methionine is abundant in sesame seeds, malt, brazil nuts, fish, and meat. The research team said, “In order to increase lifespan without reducing fertility, the balance of amino acids must be carefully controlled.” Explained.

The results of this study (Amino acid imbalance explains extension of lifespan by dietary restriction in Drosophila) were published in ‘Nature’.
