Russia-Africa Summit: Cooperation for Compensations and Artifact Returns

Russia and African countries have agreed to cooperate with regard to seeking compensation for damages caused by colonialism and to continue the return of artifacts, according to the closing declaration of the Russia-Africa summit.

The declaration stated that the participants agreed to “contribute to completing the process of decolonization in Africa and to demand compensation for the economic and humanitarian damages incurred by African countries as a result of colonial policies, including the return of artifacts that were seized as part of colonial looting.”

The two sides also agreed, according to the declaration, to oppose all forms of discrimination and intolerance including “aggressive nationalism, neo-Nazism, neo-Fascism, Afrophobia and Russophobia”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday, during the summit, that Russia is able to replace Ukraine’s grain exports to Africa, and will be ready to start supplying grain for free to six countries on the continent within three or four months.

He mentioned that these countries are Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Mali, Somalia, the Central African Republic and Eritrea, adding that they will receive between 25 and 50 thousand tons each.

Petersburg, Thursday, which is scheduled to last two days, which the Russian president described as a major event that would help strengthen relations with the continent of Africa.
