After releasing Renault models with its logo in the last year, Mitsubishi is finally launching its own model, which also benefits from a radically different design compared to its predecessor. It is about the new generation of the Mitsubishi Triton pick-up, called L200 in our parts, but the name L200 does not appear this time in the official releases. After almost all competitors in the segment have evolved substantially, the new Mitsubishi model wants to take revenge and become a formidable model among them.

The L200 / Triton has sold 5.6 million units so far, from 1978 to the present day, so it’s an important model for Mitsubishi. The last generation remained on the market for 9 years and was already completely surpassed morally and technically by competitors, who no longer emphasize only on passing or clocking capabilities, but also on interior comfort or more powerful engines. Let’s see, then, what Mitsubishi could counter these trends.

First of all, it is a new platform, even the hard frame has been redesigned. A new suspension architecture was also created, which can offer excellent off-road handling capabilities, but can also ensure a modern road holding on paved roads. Also, the direction is new, which promises to be more informative.

Mitsubishi proudly mentions that all these elements were developed only by its engineers, hinting that we are no longer dealing with Renault or Nissan clones. And we have to say that the Mitsubishi engineers and designers were left waiting, for many years now even their own models announced as new generations were actually redesigns and recalibrations of old platforms.

Another admirable novelty brought by the new generation L200 / Triton is a new diesel engine, also developed only by Mitsubishi, according to the Japanese. It is a 2.4 liter diesel engine, codenamed 4N16, to be available in 3 power versions. The most powerful version will deliver 204 HP and 470 Nm, making use of a new turbocharger, not just chosen from the current offer of turbine suppliers. And here things are perfectly explainable, since Mitsubishi Motors is one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of turbines in the world, even the turbo blowers on many Porsche models come from Mitsubishi.

There will also be two weaker versions of the same 2.4 liter engine, 150 HP and 184 HP. Both have a variable geometry turbine.

The 6-speed automatic gearbox, which will be available, comes from the previous generation, as it was very popular, says Mitsubishi. The manual box, however, will be one without a direct mechanical connection of the lever to the transmission, it will operate the gear changes following communication with the lever through an electric cable. Thus, transmission vibrations will not be transmitted to the lever, and the technology is reminiscent of Koenigsegg, although it is clear that there are huge differences in the level of sophistication.

The all-wheel drive system is one taken from the previous generation, which has evolved a bit, receiving a limited-slip differential on the center, which ensures that both axles receive torque in critical situations. The electronic traction control regimes have also been updated.

And, finally, the new Mitsubishi also wanted to have a distinct, “beast” design that would distance it from the clean and decent previous forms. Now the Mitsubishi Triton / L200 wants to be as fierce as a Ford Ranger Raptor, for example. We don’t know if it totally succeeded – that will be for the buyers to decide – but it is certain that we are finally seeing a Mitsubishi model with an original design, more ambitious than other countries, for many years now.
