The Growing Popularity of Cycling in Strasbourg: Findings from a Recent Study by INSEE

A study by INSEE reveals that cycling is increasingly favored in the Eurometropolis, and more particularly in Strasbourg.

In the metropolis of Strasbourg, the bicycle has found its followers. A study published in July by INSEE lists the modes of transport favored by French people over the age of 15 to travel between their home and their place of work in metropolitan France in 2020.

On the cycling side, it is the Eurometropolis which comes well ahead of the ranking, with 13.8% of journeys made by pedaling, with a peak of 17.8% for the city of Strasbourg alone. By comparison, the national average is 2.6%.

A rise in the power of the bike

In Oberhausbergen, 10% of journeys to and from work are done by bicycle. On the side of Bischheim, the score rises to 11.3% and reaches 17% in Schiltigheim.

Between 2017 and 2020, the Strasbourg Eurometropolis gained 1.6 points in this category and confirmed its appetite for cycling. In general, INSEE notes an evolution in modes of travel in France, with travel being done less and less by car.

In Strasbourg, 59.6% of working people opt for an alternative mode of transport to the car to get to work. Good news for the mayor of Strasbourg Jeanne Barseghian (EELV) who clearly wants to promote soft mobility in her city.
