French Athletes Shine at European Youth Olympic Festival: Marie Rougetet Wins Silver in Hammer, James Armant Sordet Wins Silver in Long Jump

The French secured two silver medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival on Thursday in Maribor, with Marie Rougetet at the hammer and James Armant Sordet at the length. Third in the 400m hurdles, Meta Tumba improved the French junior record to 57”10.

Three new medals fell into the French handshake on Thursday in Maribor, where the European Youth Olympic Festival takes place. Marie Rougetet kicked off the day by taking second place in the hammer competition. Second in the balance sheets, the Dijonnaise achieved the fourth best competition of her season, with 66.17 m. It was Finnish favorite Pinja Karha who took gold with 67.29m.

James Armant Sordet followed suit in the length competition, falling to 7.45m. Czech Petr Meindlschmid dominated the competition head and shoulders with an impressive leap to 7.90m. Meta Tumba also contributed to the tricolor record with the bronze medal in the 400m. The versatile Angoumoisine has in passing improved the French junior record, which belonged to Aurélie Chaboudez for eleven years (57”14 during the Barcelona Junior Worlds), by cutting the line in 57”10.

Jules Courel was very close to the box in the pole vault competition, but he had to settle for a fourth place, with 5.00 m. You had to cross one more bar to deserve a charm. Same scenario for Valentine Bastide, fourth in the 2000 m steeplechase in 6’43”27, without much regret since the places on the podium were negotiated in 6’36”. Winner of the heptathlon long distance competition with a nice jump measured at 6.08m, Zola Ndouma-Mona followed up with 30.04m in the javelin and 2’37”81 over 800m, which earned her a sixth place finish, with 5360 points. Finally, Emma Marsilliac completed her 200m adventure in 24”87, in seventh place.

Shovel finals

Six other Bleuets managed to reach the final of their event this Thursday in Slovenia. Leila Danet achieved this performance twice. First by taking first place in her group in shot put with 15.99m, then in the javelin, her attempt measured at 51.72m ranking her third in her group. First in his triple jump group with 14.96m, Jérémie Nzoungou reached the big leagues without a hitch. Same thing for Jade Marquis Laine, who crossed 1.70 m in height, and Samuel Conjungo, whose best discus throw fell to 56.07 m. Victorious in her 100m hurdles series in 13”54, Laura Montauban also made it into the top eight, as did Rose Perotin, who qualified for the 800m final in 2’09” 71. The competition, on the other hand, stopped at the semi-final stage for Arthur Gheerardyn-Renou, sixth in his 200m race in 22”06.
