Heavy jewel robbery in Cologne Six and a half years in prison for a member of Pink Panther

The Pink Panther gang has been blamed for numerous jewelry store robberies around the world. One member of the group is now in prison for six and a half years. The broadcast of the case in “Aktenzeichen XY … unsolved” contributes to the clarification.
Around a year after the beginning of the trial against an alleged member of the notorious gang of jeweler robbers, the Pink Panthers, a verdict was reached in the district court of Cologne. The accused received a total sentence of six and a half years, as a court spokeswoman said. The man was convicted of aggravated robbery. He was acquitted of other charges against him. The prosecution had requested a total of around 13 years in prison, the defense acquittal.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the 35-year-old is said to be jointly responsible for robberies on jewelry stores in Cologne in May 2016. In October 2016, he is said to have participated in a robbery of a valuables transporter in Esslingen, Baden-Württemberg. Items worth more than 710,000 euros are said to have been stolen.
Total loot estimated at several hundred million euros
According to earlier information from the public prosecutor’s office and the police, he committed the robberies with several accomplices and was heavily armed. After the case was broadcast in June 2020 on the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY … unsolved”, a tip from investigators from Switzerland led to the identification of the accused. He was caught by the authorities in September 2021 during a passport control at Barcelona Airport.
The Pink Panther gang is blamed for numerous jewelry store robberies around the world. The group of dozens of members emerged in the 1990s during the war in former Yugoslavia and went on to become one of the most notorious jewel thieves’ gangs in the world. Their total loot is now estimated at several hundred million euros.
