Singapore Executes Woman for Drug Trafficking in First Execution Since 2004

Singapore executed today a 45-year-old citizen of its own for drug trafficking, AFP reported, citing the Singaporean authorities.

It is the first execution of a woman in the city-state in nearly 20 years.

The executed woman was found guilty of trafficking 30.72 grams of heroin, more than twice the amount punishable by death in Singapore.

The woman, who was convicted in 2018, “benefited from due process of law and had a lawyer throughout the trial,” authorities said. She appealed against her sentence, which was rejected by the higher court on October 6 last year. Her request to the presidency to be pardoned was also rejected.

It is the first execution of a woman in Singapore since 2004.

Executions in Singapore resumed in March last year after a two-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since March last year, 15 death row inmates have been executed.

Singapore has one of the strictest drug laws in the world – trafficking more than 500 grams of cannabis and more than 15 grams of heroin can be punishable by death.
