Toyota Motor Reports 5.1% Sales Increase in 2023 First Half, Driven by Strong Demand in Japan and Easing Semiconductor Supply Restrictions

Toyota Motor, the Japanese automaker, said on Friday that its sales increased 5.1 percent in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period last year, thanks to the easing of semiconductor supply restrictions and, in particular, strong demand in Japan.

The company sold about 4.9 million cars globally in the first six months to the end of June, including cars from its luxury brand Lexus, compared to about 4.7 million in the same period of 2022.

Toyota’s sales in Japan jumped 33.2 percent to 878,215 units in the same period year on year, while sales in the United States fell 0.7 percent to just over 1 million vehicles, and sales in Asia fell half a percent to about 1.5 million units.

In June, Toyota sold 10,191 battery electric cars worldwide, including Lexus cars, of which about 5,000 were sold in China.

The company’s sales in China last June recorded its first monthly decline in three months, falling 12.8 percent year-on-year to 174,548 cars.
China sales fell 2.8 percent in the January-June period.

Global sales of hybrid electric vehicles grew 37.6 percent year-on-year to 292,131 units, accounting for less than a third of the total number of vehicles sold worldwide last month.
