Advancements in Dengue Prevention: Collaboration Between Health Ministry and CONICET

The head of the health portfolio, Dr. Luis Medina Ruiz, met with CONICET leaders with the aim of advancing in the projects they develop together, which are: the creation of a vaccine to combat dengue and a biolarvicide that kills the larvae in containers where they can be stagnant and that does not harm the environment.

The official remarked that thanks to public health research and science, these important steps can be taken that serve to protect the population: “Everything that is beneficial to citizens, the Health System will be supporting, that is why it will always We are thinking about prevention so that people suffer less from all these emerging diseases”.

Josefina Racedo, a CONICET researcher, said that they are working, together with the Ministry of Health, on a bio-input that allows controlling the proliferation of the dengue vector: “We want to address the production of this larvicide, which requires a series of approvals, to be testing it near the end of this year. These interdisciplinary teams are very necessary, which is why we have a goal in which the Faculty of Natural Sciences is also helping us”.

For his part, Atilio Pedro Castagnaro, director of the Institute of Agroindustrial Technology of the Argentine Northwest, indicated that they are working together with Cuban scientists from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, who are developing a recombinant vaccine against dengue, and that it is tetravalent. , which works for the four dengue serotypes. “They needed a collaboration with us to finish an experimentation process that begins the development of a vaccine candidate, that is why we spoke with the National Ministry of Health and we have high expectations in making this vaccine,” explained the professional.

Finally, Augusto Bellomio, director of Conicet NOA Sur, said that they have been working together with the Ministry of Health for a long time and that ties are now being strengthened to focus on vector-borne diseases, specifically dengue. “This larvicide could be used in the next epidemics. That is why this winter season is the ideal stage to start production and testing, so that when it begins to appear massively we have something to avoid it with,” he concluded.
