Why is?
That’s impossible! Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) is putting together a Broadway show and shortly after it begins, the lead actor, Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), collapses dead on stage! A new murder case for the trio Putnam, Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), who have already solved two murder cases with their investigation and the accompanying podcast. So far, however, Only Murders in the Building and not “Murders on the Stage”, but even this little thing is quickly corrected, so that our trio has to solve another murder case in their apartment building.
The main focus is on those characters who have something to do with the production of the stage play. So we wander back over the months and get to know the various actors (including Meryl Streep) and ask ourselves who the killer (or killer?) was in the end. Our detectives not only have to combine and rethink their theories regularly, but also overcome a number of hurdles in their private lives. Charlie accidentally proposes, Oliver has two hearts, and Mabel would do the podcast and investigation without her two seniors. But she knows very well that such a murder case can only be solved if the entire trio is involved in the solution!

How was it?
Since 2021, Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez have been investigating murder cases that they are processing into a podcast. Disney+ has with Only Murders in the Building brought a fine series on board, which is now already in the third round. But while the first two seasons revolved around murder cases in a large apartment building in New York, the current third season is making a leap to Broadway. But how you get the curve and the trio still have to investigate a murder case in the block of flats is quite funny. It is even mentioned and justified accordingly in the series…
In the third season, in addition to the well-known and still eerily whimsical Steve Martin and Martin Short, the focus is primarily on the newcomers. While Ant-Man Paul Rudd is the snooty superstar who still has a few secrets with him, and Meryl Streep is particularly convincing as a member of the cast who was initially a bit snooty. The development of her character and, above all, her vocal performance (she has in the must-see musical Into the Woods already sung) are remarkable. Yes, Streep delivers here too and proves what a great actress she is.
While the murder and the search for the perpetrator are of course the overarching story arc (and we co-raters are of course constantly being fooled at home), it is above all the side stories that draw us into Only Murders in the Building not only bring you into contact with all sorts of funny and whimsical characters, but also show again and again how sophisticated the main characters in particular are. This makes even lighter stories, like Selena Gomez’s, interesting and worth watching. Overall, «La Gomez» has turned into a solid and remarkable actress.

Conclusion of the third season
Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review, we only have eight of the ten episodes of the third season of Only Murders in the Building can see. But the series still doesn’t do much wrong, gives its stars the freedom they need and, above all, the comedians Martin and Short a lot of space to develop. This is used in a highly entertaining way, giving viewers a lot to smile about and laugh out loud even in the middle of an unsolved murder case. Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building can keep the pleasant level of the previous seasons and we would be absolutely happy about a final, fourth season!
The third season Only Murders in the Building runs exclusively on Disney+ starting August 8, 2023. Seasons 1 and 2 are also available there.

Muri has been with OutNow since 2002 as Methuselah. He likes (almost) everything from Disney, animation in general and monster movies. He also loves adventures from other worlds, star wars and even intelligent cinema. It’s only on rom-coms that it starts groaning. Although, he also watches them in the IMAX!
