Targeting high-growth markets expected to reach about KRW 87 trillion by 2040
Doosan Enervity has set out to preoccupy the battery recycling market, which is expected to grow rapidly.
Doosan Enerability held a board of directors meeting on the 27th and announced on the 28th that it had decided to establish Doosan Recycling Solutions, a subsidiary specializing in battery recycling.
The battery recycling market is growing rapidly along with the growth of the electric vehicle market. According to SNE Research, a global market research institute, the global battery recycling market is expected to grow more than 120 times from about 700 billion won in 2023 to about 87 trillion won in 2040.
In 2021, Doosan Energity developed its own technology to recover lithium from waste batteries and completed demonstration.
The technology developed by Doosan Energity is a method of heat-treating the internal materials of waste batteries, separating lithium using distilled water, and then extracting lithium carbonate through crystallization technology. Compared to the existing extraction method, the process is simple and economical, and the purity and recovery rate of lithium are further improved through an eco-friendly method that does not use chemicals.
“We decided to establish a subsidiary with an independent management system to preoccupy business opportunities in the fast-growing battery recycling market,” said Choi Jae-hyeok, managing director in charge of strategy/innovation at Doosan Enability. We will accelerate our growth,” he said.
Doosan Recycling Solutions plans to expand its business in cooperation with raw material suppliers. After the subsidiary is established, commercial production facilities will be built and lithium will be recovered by processing about 3,000 tons of raw materials annually from the second half of 2025.
