Sony Interactive Surpasses 40 Million PlayStation 5 Sales Worldwide

Since its launch in November 2020, Sony Interactive has sold more than 40 million PlayStation 5 gaming consoles.

“Thank you for your tireless support”: With a Post on the Official PlayStation Blog Sony Interactive President Jim Ryan announces that 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been sold worldwide since its launch in November 2020. For comparison: With the PlayStation 4, this mark was reached a few weeks earlier, namely in mid-May 2016.

The pace of the PS5 catch-up is nonetheless remarkable. Ryan points to the adverse launch environment for good reason: the world of 2020 was very different from the one in 2019 when the console was announced. Despite the “unprecedented Covid challenges” the Sony teams would have done their utmost to deliver the PlayStation 5 on time.

It took months for the supply chains to normalize: In fact, the PlayStation 5 was hard to come by until the end of 2021 – demand far outstripped the supply available. Since the turn of the year, the inventories of mail order companies and electronics stores have been well stocked. A temporary price reduction will apply up to and including August 7: Instead of the recommended retail price of €549, €474.99 will be due – most retailers are currently charging €459.99 (overview).

In retrospect, PlayStation boss Ryan also mentions the fact that the console buyers at the launch of the “best games catalog” was available in PlayStation history. In the meantime, the selection has grown significantly again, to more than 2,500 PS5 titles – including exclusive games like Returnal, Gran Turismo 7, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon: Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and remakes of The Last of Us Part 1 and Uncharted.
